Nuclear Reactor Technology: Energy Challenges of the 21st Century Masterclass

With countries across Southeast Asia increasingly opening up to the nuclear power option, and established nuclear power programs developing successfully across Asia and the Middle East, an understanding of nuclear reactor technology’s potential, safety features and reliability is essential. This masterclass presents an in-depth look at reactor technology from Rosatom/ Atomenergoprom’s research institute and university Moscow Power Engineering Institute:

  • Vibroacoustic certifi cation of nuclear power stations as a means of improving their reliability and safety
  • Thermohydraulic factors causing the growth of dynamic stresses and cracks in the heads of pressurized-vessel reactors
  • Prospects of increase in service life of fuel rods in advanced light water reactors
  • Problems and solutions for personnel training on high technology

About your workshop leader
Professor Prosuryakov Konstantin Nikolayevich graduated from Moscow Power Engineering Institute and has worked in the MPEI Nuclear Power Plant Department since 1959. During 1986-1988 he served as an expert for the USSR Council of Ministers and for the Russian Federation State Duma (Parliament) during 2007-2008. As well as an award for “Contribution to the Enlightenment” he has received several medals and other awards. His research interests lie in the specifi cations and safety of nuclear reactors, and R&D methods providing forecasting and prevention of vibration

Nuclear Power Project Viability Masterclass

Emerging markets as well as successfully developed nuclear power programs constantly search for ways to best understand and improve the project’s viability studies and success. This masterclass takes a close look at the fi ne details of planning and executing a nuclear power program:

  • Considerations for the fi nancing of a nuclear power project at different stages
  • Viability study duration and impact on cost
  • Construction cost
  • Operating cost
  • Waste disposal cost
  • Decommissioning and other fi nal costs
  • Site location in terms of uranium supply, cooling facilities and grid proximity
  • Embarking on a nuclear power project as an emerging market
  • Improving upon past nuclear projects with careful viability studies and planning
  • The viability of nuclear power in Singapore

About your workshop leader

Dr. Hooman Peimani is the Head of Energy Security & Geopolitics in the Energy Studies Institute based at the National University of Singapore. As well as academic entities he has worked at energy corporations such as Nord Stream, in the Canadian government as well as in national and international institutions. He has published ten books and over two hundred news and journal articles, lending his extensive and diverse work experience to matters of energy security in Asia-Pacifi c and the Middle East.

Vincent Nkong-Njock, graduated from French National Polytechnic Institute and the National Institute for Nuclear Sciences and Techniques, France, is Senior Nuclear Specialist at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). For the last 20 years, he is involved in the nuclear field in the French Atomic Energy Commission as well as in national and international energy institutions. He is now responsible in the IAEA support to new States for introducing nuclear power in their energy mix.
